PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

United We Stand

By Susan Marrinan

Unity! What unifies Democrats?

Every 4 years the Democratic Platform Committee publishes the Democratic Party Platform.

The platform of 2016 can be found at www.democrats.org. This inspiring document reflects the values of our party. It is a moral compass.

“Democrats believe that cooperation is better than conflict, unity is better than division, empowerment is better than resentment, and bridges are better than walls.“

~ Preamble, Democratic Party Platform 2016.

We are united in purpose and that purpose is to elect competent candidates to the House, Senate, and White House who reflect Democratic values.

The pandemic has placed the lethal ineptitude and selfishness of our current Federal administration on full display. Every press conference reveals Trump as a showman, a reality show host pretending to be president while focusing on his ratings and political future rather than the welfare of the American people. Meanwhile real people are on the front lines dying for real.

Harry Truman: “The buck stops here.”

Donald Trump: “I am not responsible.”

We see that the President’s “manly” refusal to wear a mask, ignoring social distancing and encouraging the “liberation” of states are not solutions. They are distractions. We need competent leaders to help us survive and to get our economy up and running.

Our President makes it temptingly easy to join the blame game but blaming won’t help us; recalibrating our moral compass as a nation will.

Are we united in wanting the economy to rebound? Of course. But returning to the “old way” isn’t good enough to sustain us in the future. Attention must be paid to workers, health care, family sick leave, and income, racial and gender equality. These issues will be addressed in the 2020 Democratic Party Platform. Please read it; it will make you proud to be a Democrat.

It is time to do more than just believe in Democratic values. It’s time to unify, to elect a leader who unites Americans instead of dividing us.

It is time to find a voice, to act and to fight for our democracy, our values, and our future as a nation. The stakes could not be higher.

“Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not a power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and Senators and Congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.”

~ Franklin D. Roosevelt
