Coronado Democratic Club General Meeting
Date: Thursday, April 3, 2025
Time: Social begins at 6:00 pm. Meeting: 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm
Location: Winn Room, Coronado Public Library, 640 Orange Ave.
Program: Join us to hear Arcela Nunez-Alvarez speak on the “Latest on Immigration and its Impact on Border Communities”.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER: Arcela Nuñez is a Latina immigrant who came from Mexico and settled in San Marcos, California, when she was 12 years old. She was raised by a single mom who worked tirelessly in sewing factories earning minimum wage to afford necessities. The family faced extraordinary hardship but were wrapped with generosity by many caring individuals and organizations who helped the family start a new life. She was the first in her family to go to college. She attended UCLA and California State University San Marcos to pursue her bachelor’s degree and Masters/Ph.D. degrees in history and political science at the University of Minnesota. Inspired by the great educator Paulo Freire, she became a maestra del pueblo (educator), teaching for liberation. With a group of community educators, she co-founded Universidad Popular, a revolutionary education organization cultivating leadership, freedom, health, wisdom, and dignity. Through teaching, she nurtures democracy, empowering ordinary people to own their voice and use their power to shape their immediate community and society. She began her teaching and community organizing journey in high school when she joined MEChA, a Chicanx student organization dedicated to promoting precious ancestral knowledge, community service and civic participation, core values that continue to guide her life to this day.
